چکیده

cal evidence of which we are aware is that this technology is by far more complex than simply installing an automated-sorting scale unit and a set of one-way gates in a hog house. This complexity is evidenced by what appears to be incomplete animal adaptation, various design flaws, and unintended and un expected consequences of these systems. These problems – among others – have been confirmed by observations both casual and controlled over the past 18 months by a research team at the University of Illinois working on a project funded by the Illinois Pork Producers Association and National Pork Board. An on-going research study was designed to evaluate the impact that current auto-sort floor layouts have on pig per formance and well-being and to further optimize auto-sort layouts based on pig behavior. Currently, experimental auto-sort layouts have been assembled at two separate hog units in Illinois in which we are examining the design and operation of specific components of auto-sort technology: the scale unit, its entries and exits; the one-way gates; the various layouts; location of important resources such as feeders and waterers in each of the various layouts now being employed; novel layout approaches; relative plan dimensions of different zones in respective layouts; and so on. Many thousands of observations and measurements of various kinds already have been made. Video-records and ear-tag-RFID weight and scale-use data from many hundreds of hours of observations of thousands of pigs have been captured. Packer and Pig Champ data have been collected as well. Through three replicates of 600 pigs per treatment group, careful observations and data analysis has confirmed that many flaws do indeed exist and benefits are there, but not yet optimized. Behavioral vices and patterns are significantly impacted by the various auto-sort floor layouts (food-court, water-pen, and fast-lane). Toward a better understanding of pig behavior and pig welfare.

Pork production began to flourish in the USA after the practice of finishing pigs on corn was popularized in the late 1600s. By the 1840s, there were 35 million pigs and 20 million people in the USA and Cincinnati was the world's largest pork market. Between 1890 and the present, the total number of pigs in the USA has remained at 50-60 million, but dramatic changes in swine husbandry over the ...

Empirical analysis of pig welfare levels and their impact on pig breeding efficiency—Based on 773 pig farmers’ survey data

Few studies of the pig production efficiency are from the perspective of animal welfare. Therefore, this study conducted a comprehensive evaluation of pig welfare levels based on survey data from 773 pig farmers from 23 counties in the Chinese provinces of Hunan, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Shanxi. This study used the Delphi method, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and Data Envelopment A...

Increased Foraging in Outdoor Organic Pig Production—Modeling Environmental Consequences

Consumers' motivations for buying organic products include a wish of acquiring healthy, environmentally friendly products from production systems that also ensure a high level of animal welfare. However, the current Danish organic pig production faces important challenges regarding environmental impact of the system. High ammonia emissions arise from outdoor concrete areas with growing pigs and...

Trichinella britovi as a risk factor for alternative pig production systems in Greece and Europe

Trichinellosis is an important zoonosis and the most common source of human infection is meat from pigs and wild boars. The European Union (EU) supports alternative pig production systems (organic and free-ranging) as sustainable farming systems. However, these systems that allow outdoor access for farm animals, may create new or reintroduce old risks to public health. During the last years, al...

Evaluating environmental impacts of contrasting pig farming systems with life cycle assessment.

Environmental impacts of 15 European pig farming systems were evaluated in the European Union Q-PorkChains project using life cycle assessment. One conventional and two non-conventional systems were evaluated from each of the five countries: Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, France and Germany. The data needed for calculations were obtained from surveys of 5 to 10 farms from each system. The sys...
